The Julia Martin House
90 Bickford Street, Jamaica Plain, MA

This senior housing is built on (Boston Housing Authority) city owned land, and where once stood the first elderly high rise housing building built in the city of Boston, is now a 56 Unit HUD 202 Housing for Seniors.

Vertec has extensive experience in building senior housing and working with innovative building materials, as demonstrated by this federally-funded project. A newly-built four-story wood frame apartment building for low-income and frail seniors, Bickford Senior Housing consists of 56 one-bedroom apartments of approximately 600 square feet each.

The Bickford building offers a multi purpose community center and management offices. All units are universally adaptable, with 5 units fully handicap-accessible. The building was designed to provide a comfortable living environment for independent seniors while also enabling them to easily transition to a supportive-living program if their needs change.

The project's innovative design includes many energy conservation features including "green building" materials. The building design offers heat recovery components in the HVAC system and energy-efficient windows. The exterior is finished in an array of attractive, durable, low-maintenance materials, including innovative zinc, terra cotta tile and resinous panel systems. The structure is complemented by outdoor features, such as sitting areas and a community garden.
